Listed Buildings

We have undertaken numerous projects for English Heritage and National Trust, having being involved with the maintenance and up keep of many churches and listed buildings in Surrey and London.

With an in depth knowledge of traditional materials and building techniques, including lime mortars and specialist lead work. much of our experience has been gained working on listed buildings, both domestic and commercial. Great emphasis is placed on the considerations and care necessary when working on buildings of this nature.

Complete restoration - Cambridge

This house needed complete restoration, both externally and internally. Rafters were replaced and a new roof put on. Internally walls were constructed and alterations carried out to the existing layout. The property was rewired and a central heating system introduced. Works were concluded with the addition of a new hand built kitchen and furniture

Loft conversion - Chobham, Surrey

A roof space above an existing garage and games room was adapted and linked to the master bedroom, joining the main house to the new build. It provided extra space in the master bedroom for a walk in wardrobe and dressing room plus the welcome addition of an en suite bathroom.

An additional project undertaken at this property was a complete construction of a first floor bathroom supported by four oak legs and timber framework from the ground floor. The extended tiles were coated with a natural yoghurt - a traditional method used on older buildings to facilitate ageing to better integrate aesthetically with the existing house.

Lead works

Our introduction into working on listed buildings and heritage sites originated over 25 years ago through specialist lead work contracts undertaken by Peter Egan. Here are some examples of the lead work carried out then and still pride ourselves on doing today

Projects include: Hampton Court Palace - Ham House, Richmond - Greenhouse, Kew Gardens - Osterley House - Clandon House, Guildford - Tower of London - Royal Naval College, Greenwhich

St mary's Church - Thorpe

General interior refurbishment of St Mary's Church in Thorpe, consisting of new limestone floors and decorative finishes in traditional breathable paints.

Stevenage, Hertfordshire

A complete refurbishment was undertaken to the roof dome which was beginning to fail. Works included strengthening of the wrought iron frame, new glass panels, new lead work around the base of the dome and weathering of the glass panels. A new winch system was installed to which the entrance hall chandelier was attached.

St Lawrance's Church - Effingham

The church wished to install a disabled WC in what used to be the heating chamber. The chamber was a separate building and could not be accessed from within the church. To join the two an opening was formed through the tower's one metre thick wall. The existing heating chamber floor was removed and lowered to the same height as that of the church. Memorials were removed from the walls and relocated to allow the stone entrance to be formed.
